New Zealand - Day 2b - Muriwai Beach

Enrichment Moment: Most energy generation in NZ is from renewable sources - geothermal (at Taupo) , some wind & mostly hydro in south Island & Taupo.  Wind farms in Central south island. Electric lines transfer energy to substations & moved north - uses Alternating Current. There is coal back-up in case natural sources fail.

Lovely lunch - just perfect - sandwiches of ham, avocados, brie, & tomatoes with sides of banana & mandarin oranges.

Desert?  Nutella Crepes.

Muriwai Beach - (Maui meaning -> wai = Water)
  - Volcanic black sands and many shells - mostly mussels, cockels, and worm shells - pieces of sand dollars broken up in the surf.  Long flat seabed here, so the waves wash in a long distance.

Norfolk Pines are everywhere - used for logging & paper milling, the trees grow straight and have regularly spaced branches.
Greenshell Mussell with Algae growing up from the surface.  Mussels are frequently grown for harvest here in NZ - They are grown on suspended ropes, but since they are sessile it is easy for algaes to grow on their surfaces.  This was difficult to picture - there was some very pretty reflection from the algae in the sunlight that is not visible here.

Fun for older kids - quick video

Another lovely day in Kiwiland!
