04/04/2023 - Chicago Day 3

Wonderful breakfast - sent out Anika to pick up the Starbucks & Clover to get donuts.., tomorrow I might switch that… but tomorrow is our slow start day, so we may finally hit the Creperie 😁

Heading to M. of Science & Industry this morning.  Anika's getting the hang of following phone instructions for Chicago's Metro.  Awesome to see she & I are getting on the same page with that.  She'll need to be on her own in this someday & I want her to not freak out the way I did in London…. Now… it doesn't mean she won't… but she will have been through learning a whole new city transit system before.  Love love love them using Google Pay tap with the phones to get onto the train.  So much easier than taking an extra card!

Brown Line 9 stops to Harold & Washington… then switching to Red the rest of the way.

Saw a street sweeper with the front painted like a Cubs jersey this morning.  Wish I'd gotten a picture.  Did get a quick pic of another art deco styled restaurant.  Chicago LOVES it's 1920s history.

Switched to the wrong Red Line at the right off exit… or maybe the wrong off exit… but between some Hispanic gentlemen who helped via voice to text and a local on the train (who looked at the phone a bit to interpret) we got everything figured out.  Now we're going to the Garfield exit & walk to the museum.

Saw we were passing by Chinatown & commented on thw beautiful architecture to the kids.  Nice Chinese local chimed in to tell us that Chicago has the best Chinatown in America… better than Ny or San Fran.  Best times between 5-8pm when all vendor are open & active.

Everyone super nice ❤️

Annnddd….. walking would have taken us an hour… so now we're on a bus to S&I.  Our Google maps was stuck in our original path and didn't want to deviate…. This is the problem with not having a map on paper…. And my other problem is not being able to read street signs at a certain distance… yay for Anika having young eyes. πŸ˜‚

We're so late for our scheduled entrance time. At the museum… an hour late… but I'm sure it will be fine.

It was fine, of course!  We got inside and it was absolutely magical!

The kids were awed & drawn into the mystical beauty of hands-on interactive SCIENCE!

NEXT...

Museum of Contemporary Art

Main Floor - Indigenous Peoples' Art Room

After bathroom run I lost the kids....

My text Comments to a friend.....
Atm a bit lost
In museum of contemporary art & went to the restroom
Kids have gone somewhere else...
I have no idea how to get to the rest of the gallery
I can see there is an upstairs.

. But I can't find an open staircase
The stairs I find say "no art this way"
Or "Emergency exit only"
Everyone I see is wearing black....
Scarves...
Berets.
Shirts
Employees have black shirts labeled

AVANT
So i finally asked one...
Finding it ALL very Avant Gard that they have hidden the art...
And not provided a map
Just a list of the art found on each floor ....
Which cannot be found...

2nd Floor…. Found video art… and Environmental / marginalization of minority peoples' art blended together

And Impressionist.... or Perspective.... I don't know what anything is called, even if I find it interesting.  I know nothing, but explained what I saw in this to the ladies who were managing its security - and they seemed really fascinated because they'd never quite understood why people kept walking back and forth in front of it like I was...

And eventually found the Children... Who had pretty much completed the entire museum before I found the second floor.

More bus chaos - we've decided to do what it says, not what it shows.  We think buildings are messing with GPS.  I miss paper.

SOOOO WINDY TODAY! CLICK HERE for video

Sears Tower next!

Was not texting as we went with this, but the entire Sears Tower experience is a wonderful overview of history of the city as well as a fun experience.

For starters, we go down into the basement area, through a maze of museum that covers the origins of a town that was covered in people’s Darkwater….

Through the Chicago fire ….

A history of the buildings - So many beautiful iconic buildings in this city!

And then there’s the people… Obamas….

Michael Jordan…. Oprah….

The culture….

Food…..

All the Chicago things!

And there’s the Oh so High Experience at the Top of the Tower!

Going UP So FAST! CLICK for the floor counter

First Moments.....

Then Realizing how COOL THIS IS!

And maayyyybeee....... maybe mom's not to crazy or uncool after all

And how did I recognize that the placement of Ferris Bueler would be there?  The movie may have been out when I was there last… but I don’t think so…. But I felt like I was remembering it more than seeing that spot for the first time.  I know… deja vu….

So many great opportunities for selfies - Just want to remember this moment forever!

But had to come back down eventually…. CLICK for the floor counter going down

And brave another gift shop.... NOT buying all the tempting things....

Like Stuffed Pizza - because *everybody* needs some Stuffed Pizza.... AND more Cheese in their lives

And go home on a train (purple train took us ALL THE WAY OUT!  It was AMAZING!)

And dinner…. At a little Potsticker place with noodle or rice bowls, bobo… and GINGER TEA THAT was to die for!  I had to ask after…. They just grate fresh ginger, add sugar… and steep in hot water.  Best thing I’ve ever drank I think… I don’t want to have anything else for the rest of my life.  (feels that way anyhow… I could live on this).

More cupcakes for desert

And now we’re in bed trying to get everything ready for tomorrow.  Gangster tour tomorrow… How did it get to be Wednesday?  And I’m still excited about the next day!  Even if it is halfway through break.  I’m loving this trip. <3   Love this city!

I told my kids if ever either of them moved to Chicago I would happily visit them regularly.

*please note on today's post - the Metro (L), Metra (train), and Bus pictures are not necessarily in the correct order/placement.  No idea where any of them belong, but I be the kids could set me straight... if they were still away when I'm publishing this πŸ˜€

Sleep well Virginia!
